Women’s Volleyball struggles against Salem in home opener
PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University women’s volleyball fell to Salem (W. Va.) University 3-0 in its home opener Thursday night.

PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University women's volleyball fell to Salem (W. Va.) University 3-0 in its home opener Thursday night.
The Celtics (2-4) put up a fight in the first set but could not hold off the Tigers (1-0), falling 25-19, 25-18 and 25-19.
Rebecca Hess (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) led Carlow with 15 digs and nine kills, while Emily Hess (Saltsburg, Pa./River Valley HS) and Kelsey Sufak (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes HS) contributed 12 and 11 digs, respectively. Suzy Walker (Boswell, Pa./North Star HS) added eight kills, and Sarah Porter (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway HS) tallied 13 assists in the effort.
The Celtics started off strong, winning a long rally to go ahead 7-2. Salem recovered and slowly chipped away at Carlow's advantage to tie the game at 14-all. A 6-0 run handed the Tigers a 23-16 lead enroute to the first set win.
The teams traded leads and tied the score throughout the beginning of the second set before Salem pulled ahead, 20-15. A kill and two Tigers errors afforded Carlow its final three points of the 25-18 game.
The Celtics fell behind 6-0 in the third set before an ace from Emily Hess set off a 6-1 run that saw Carlow trailing by three.
Carlow tried to keep it close, but back-to-back kills from Salem ended the third set and the match, 25-19.
Marika Righi led the Tigers with a game-high, double-double 19 digs and 16 kills. Ana Julia Avila Vian added 19 digs, and Valentina Poti recorded a double-double with 13 digs and 12 kills.
vs. Penn State Fayette: W, 3-1 (Sept. 3)
The Celtics notched a 3-1 win over Penn State Fayette (0-5) yesterday with scores of 16-25, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-20.
Rebecca Hess led Carlow with a game-high 17 kills and 17 digs. Emily Hess tallied a game-high 18 digs and 20 assists, and Porter recorded a double-double with 15 assists and 15 digs.
Kaylee Doppelheuer led the Lions with 14 kills, and three different players tallied 15 digs apiece.
Carlow returns to action tomorrow with a 6 p.m. match against Wilson College.
