Women’s Volleyball bests Penn State Shenango

The Celtics (5-8) held the Lions (4-6) to single digit kills in the first and second sets, winning 25-8, 25-14 and 25-18.
Prior to the match, Carlow celebrated senior outside hitter Rebecca Hess (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) for achieving career milestone 1,000 kills last week against Salem.
Hess added 11 more kills to that number tonight along with 11 digs. Sarah Porter (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway HS) contributed 17 assists, and Carrah Scardina (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highlands HS) tallied five of Carlow's 11 service aces on the night.
The Celtics went ahead 18-7 and scored six unanswered points to decisively end the first set, 25-8.
Shenango trailed 5-4 in the second set before Carlow strung together a 9-1 run to take a 14-5 lead. The Lions battled back to a six-point deficit, but once again the Celtics slammed the door with five unanswered points in the 25-14 victory.
Shenango maintained a marginal lead through the start of the third set before a kill from Suzy Walker (Boswell, Pa./North Star HS) tied the game at 7-all. An attack error and two kills by Paige Keller (Liberty Borough, Pa./South Allegheny HS) gave Carlow a 10-7 lead.
The Lions kept it close throughout the remainder of the set, but two errors and a kill gave Carlow a 24-17 advantage. Shenango landed one more kill before handing Carlow the win with a service error to end the game.
Taylor Burns led the Lions with seven kills and nine digs, while Taegan Scheller landed three service aces.
The Celtics travel to Houghton (N.Y.) for a tri-match with the host team and Fredonia Sept. 27.
