Men’s Volleyball conquered by crosstown foe Chatham

Caio Matos Machado (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Bishop Guilfoyle HS) led Carlow with five kills, while Ryan Callahan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area HS) and Jaden Michalski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Obama Academy) tallied five digs apiece.
The Celtics played best in the second set. Chatham (6-3) started off with a 9-5 lead, but the Celtics quickly began chipping away at the advantage.
A kill from Gavin McLain (Acworth, Ga./North Paulding HS) and a Cougars error saw Carlow down two. Both teams collectively committed five errors in a row, and another Chatham attacking error put Carlow within one point of tying the game.
Back-to-back kills from Machado and Rohan Bhattarai (Baldwin, Pa./Baldwin HS) tied the game at 13-all. The Celtics tied the score at 14-14 will a kill from David Valentino (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional HS) before a 5-1 run put Chatham ahead, 19-15.
Carlow trailed by two points three separate times the remainder of the set but were unable to claim the win in a 25-21 set loss.
Chatham jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the first set, and an 8-1 run put the Cougars ahead, 19-7, enroute to a 25-11 victory.
The Celtics started strong in the third set, but Chatham quickly tied the game at 5-all. A subsequent 11-4 run gave the Cougars a 16-9 advantage.
Back-to-back Chatham errors saw the Celtics trailing by five before the Cougars ended the set and the match on an 8-2 run to win, 25-13.
Andrew Shepard hit a game-high six kills, and Evan Barrick added a game-high eight digs.
The Celtics host Hilbert College for a 2 p.m. AMCC match Feb. 14.
