Softball drops two to Grove City in home opener

The Celtics dropped to 1-13 while the Wolverines improved to 8-2.
Game 1: L, 19-4 (6 inn.)
A huge 10-run sixth inning for the Wolverines put the game out of reach for the Celtics to start the day. Grove City pounded 22 hits, including 10 doubles.
The Wolverines scored three runs on three hits in the top of the first, but Carlow kept it close after scoring two runs in the bottom of the second.
Mackenzie Egley (Shelocta, Pa./Armstrong HS) led off with an infield error to reach first, followed by a single to right-center off the bat of Carrah Scardina (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highlands HS). Deborah Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Robert G. Cole HS) hit a one-out single to right to load the bases, and Kamyia Morris (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic HS) hit a two-out, two-run double to left field to see the Celtics trailing, 3-2.
Grove City scored six runs on seven hits in the top of the fourth to go ahead, 9-2.
Once again Carlow cut the Wolverine's lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the fifth after retiring Grove City in order in the top half of the frame.
Gianna Ferrieri (South Park, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic HS) drew a walk, Mackenzie Egley doubled to left-center to put runners on the corners with one out, and Taylor Egley (Shelocta, Pa./Armstrong HS) hit a two-out single to center field to bring them both home.
It all fell apart in the next inning, as the Wolverines scored 10 runs on nine hits and left a Carlow runner stranded in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.
Cailyn Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills HS) suffered the loss after allowing eight earned runs on eight hits with three walks in an inning. Morris went 3 for 4 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base.
Abigail Meadors earned the complete game win, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Alivia Lantzy led the Wolverines, going 4 for 5 with three doubles, five RBI and two runs scored. Meadors helped her own cause, going 4 for 5 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored.
Game 2: L, 5-3
The Celtics held off the Grove City barrage until the very end, as the Wolverines were able to bring two runners home in the top of the seventh for the win.
A two-out single put a run on the board for Grove City in the first, but Carlow quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the inning.
Garza hit a lead-off single up the middle and an error in the next at-bat put two on for Carlow. Morris battled through an 11 pitch at-bat to draw a walk and load the bases for Taylor Egley, who singled to right field to tie the game.
Grove City turned a double play that allowed the second run to score before the Wolverines escaped the inning by catching a Carlow runner stealing second.
Carlow added a run in the third after a lead-off triple from Mackenzie Egley and a one-out infield single by Taylor Egley to bring her home. The Wolverines escaped a bases-loaded jam to end the inning, but the Celtics retired them in order in the top of the fourth.
Grove City tied the game in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs on four hits. The Wolverines had runners on second and third in the sixth, but pitcher Tatum Wiggs (Boron, Calif./Boron HS) forced two pop ups and a ground out to end the inning.
Grove City retired Carlow in order in the bottom half of the frame and made their move in the seventh.
A single and a double prompted a pitching change for the Celtics, and an RBI single to left field put the Wolverines ahead, 4-3.
In the next at-bat, Morris robbed Grove City of a run and put two outs on the board after making an incredible play. She dove for a shallow fly ball in center field, sprung to her feet and one-hopped the throw home to Garza, who tagged the runner coming from third.

An RBI single up the middle brought in another run for the Wolverines, and Grove City turned a double play to end the game in the bottom of the inning.
Wiggs suffered the loss after allowing four earned runs on 12 hits with one strikeout and one walk in six innings. Ferrieri tossed the final inning, allowing one earned run on two hits.
Taylor Egley went 3 for 4 with two RBI, and Mackenzie Egley went 2 for 4 with a triple. Garza hit 2 for 4 and Scardina went 2 for 2.
Lantzy earned the complete game win, allowing three runs (two earned) on 10 hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
Alexis Jackson went 4 for 4 with an RBI, and Emma Vok went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
The Celtics travel to Penn State New Kensington for a 2 p.m. doubleheader March 27.
