ERIE, Pa. --- Carlow University men's volleyball went 0-2 at the Penn State Behrend tri-match Saturday afternoon.
The Celtics fell 3-0 to host Penn State Behrend and got swept in the nightcap against St. John Fisher.
vs. Penn State Behrend: L, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-15)
The Lions (10-5, 4-1 AMCC) hit .403 on the day with 11 services aces and 14 blocks.
Caio Matos Machado (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Bishop Guilfoyle HS) and Luke Campana (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) led the Celtics with six kills apiece. Angelo Fernandez (Williamsport, Pa./St. John Neumann Regional Academy) picked up five digs, and Ryan Callahan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area HS) tallied 11 assists.
Trailing 3-2, Penn State Behrend went on an 8-0 run to lead, 10-3, enroute to a 25-14 first set victory.
Carlow trailed by one early in the second set, but two brief, five-point runs put the Lions up, 18-8. The Celtics outscored Behrend 7-3 to trail by six, but the Lions landed the final four points to win, 25-15.
Two service errors tied the game twice for the Celtics, but a 5-0 run for Behrend and stretches of scoring two points for every Carlow point handed the Lions a 25-15 third set win.
Will Streicher led the Lions with a game-high nine kills. Jack Steele had four blocks, while Tarendran Heyward and Rafe Hankey combined for 31 assists.
vs. St. John Fisher: L, 3-0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-16)
A tired Celtics team turned around for the second match of the day at 2 p.m. The Cardinals (8-6) hit .426 with 12 service aces in the match.
Gavin McLain (Acworth, Ga./North Paulding HS) led the Celtics with four kills. Rohan Bhattarai (Baldwin, Pa./Baldwin HS) added a game-high five digs, while Callahan recorded seven assists.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set and outscored the Celtics 8-1 to end the set with a decisive 25-9 win.
The Celtics went up 8-4 in the second set, but an 11-2 run for St. John Fisher gave the Cardinals a 15-10 lead. A 9-2 run ended the second set 25-15 in favor of the Cardinals.
Another early lead for Carlow was short-lived, as St. John Fisher strung together brief three-point stints enroute to a 25-16 victory.
Coleton Welter tallied a game-high seven kills. Three different players recorded double-digit assists.
The Celtics host Penn State Behrend for a 7 p.m. AMCC match Feb. 25.
