Men’s Volleyball swept in doubleheader at Mount St. Joseph

CINCINNATI, Ohio --- Carlow University men's volleyball traveled to Mount St. Joseph University for a doubleheader Saturday.
The Lions (7-6) defeated the Celtics (0-12) in six straight sets.
Game 1: L, 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-17)
The Lions hit almost twice as many kills as the Celtics in the first match.
Carlow traded leads with MSJ through much of the first set, but the Lions steadily pulled away toward the end to win, 25-19.
MSJ hit .345 in the second set, jumping out to a 9-1 lead to start the game.
The Lions extended their advantage to 16-5 en route to a 25-12 win.
MSJ led, 5-0, in the third set and did not allow Carlow a chance to catch up in the 25-17 final set win.
Russ Cyprowski and Colin Wiegand led the Celtics with seven kills apiece.
Coulter Chaffee added 11 assists, and Will Piccolino tallied six digs in the effort.
Ryan Bollhauer led all players with 11 kills in the match.
Game 2: L, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-18)
Carlow fared somewhat better in the second match of the day.
Cyprowski once again led the Celtics with seven kills and nine digs, while James Stone tallied 12 assists.
Carlow kept it close in the first set before a kill from Bollhauer set off a 5-0 run to give MSJ a 16-8 lead.
Wiegand hit a kill to afford Carlow its own 5-0 run to cut the Lions' advantage to 18-15.
MSJ ended the set on a 6-1 run to win, 25-17.
The Lions led, 5-1, to start the second set and stayed just out of reach of the Celtics through the remainder of the game. Carlow came to within two points of tying the score several times, but MSJ won, 25-21.
The Celtics took the lead in the third set, but a 5-0 run put the Lions out front.
Two Carlow kills and an MSJ attack error tied the score, 9-all, but the Lions pulled away to lead, 17-12, on the way to a 25-18 third set victory.
Kyle Rees and Jude Lewis combined for 25 of the Lions' 47 kills in the match.
The Celtics host St. Vincent College Saturday, March 11 for a 12 p.m. game at St. Joseph Athletic & Fitness Center gymnasium.
