Women’s Volleyball battles to five sets against Waynesburg

Rebecca Hess led the charge with a double-double, match-leading 22 kills and 20 digs, while Javonna Perkins tallied 11 kills and five blocks. Meghan Alexander recorded 50 assists, and four other Celtics added double-digit digs in the effort.
The Celtics (5-3) and the Yellow Jackets (5-4) were evenly matched throughout the entire day.
Carlow led the first set, 24-20, but the Yellow Jackets took advantage of several errors and went on a six-point run to win the set, 26-24.
The Celtics started off strong with a 6-2 lead in the second set, but a kill set off a 9-0 run that gave Waynesburg an 11-6 lead.
Carlow slowly began chipping away at the Yellow Jackets' margin, but Waynesburg managed to stay out front to win the second game, 25-23.
Trailing 2-0 in the match, the Celtics rallied and picked up a win in the third set.
Carlow jumped out to a 5-1 advantage and maintained its lead the remainder of the set to win, 25-23.
Both teams battled into a long fourth set, with the Celtics coming out on top, 31-29.
Waynesburg went on a 7-0 run to lead, 10-4, but Carlow kept at it until the very end.
Two kills from Alison Humberston and a Yellow Jackets attacking error gave the Celtics a marginal 22-21 lead, but Waynesburg quickly tied the game with another kill.
The teams traded leads and tied the score six more times before a kill from Hess tied the game, 29-all. Waynesburg handed Carlow the set with back-to-back errors, forcing a fifth set.
The Yellow Jackets raced to a 6-2 lead en route to a 15-8 victory to win the fifth set and the match.
Carlow returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 20 when it hosts Salem (W.Va.) University for a 6 p.m. match inside St. Joseph Athletic & Fitness Center gymnasium.
