Strong first, final quarters not enough to push Women’s Basketball past Alfred State

The Celtics (2-16, 2-8 AMCC) outscored the Pioneers 19-11 off the bench and shot 60 percent (9 for 15) from the foul line on the night.
Audry Clingenpeel (Coolville, Ohio/Federal Hocking HS) shot 4 for 4 from the charity stripe and led the Celtics with a season-high 17 points and four steals off the bench. Emari Stinnette (Baltimore, Md./Randallstown HS) shot 4 for 4 from the foul line and contributed 11 points, and Gia Rosensteel (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem HS) added six steals and dished out four assists. Josie Horne (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central HS) pulled down a season-high 14 rebounds in the effort.
Both teams tied the score several times throughout the first quarter, with a last-minute jumper from Horne putting Carlow ahead, 14-13.
The Celtics maintained a marginal lead, but Alfred State (12-8, 7-4 AMCC) slowly chipped away to tie the game at 20-all. A 14-2 run to end the quarter sent the Pioneers into the locker room with a 12-point lead.
Alfred State held the Celtics scoreless for over five minutes to start the third quarter, outscoring Carlow, 12-8, and pushing their advantage to 16.
Although the Celtics outscored the Pioneers 19-15 in the fourth quarter, it was not enough to erase the deficit as Alfred State maintained a double figure lead until the end.
The Pioneers outrebounded the Celtics 55-52 and scored 20 points off 27 Carlow turnovers.
Emeline Barton led the Pioneers with a game-high, double-double 21 points and 18 rebounds, and Taylor Searle added 10 points.
Carlow hosts Pitt Greensburg for a makeup game Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.
