PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University senior Hunter DeStefano led men's volleyball with several academic awards this season.
DeStefano, a nursing major from Harrison City, Pa., joined the inaugural men's volleyball team in 2020 and was also a four-year athlete on the men's basketball team.
Thanks to his hard work on the court and in the classroom, DeStefano earned several national awards. He was named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® at-large team; the Daktronics National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar-Athlete team; and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) All-Academic team.
The 2023 Academic All-District® Men's and Women's At-Large Teams, selected by CSC, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
The CSC Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed at the links above.
The NAIA CSC Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported through the NAIA national office.
The NAIA released the 2023 Daktronics NAIA Men's Volleyball Scholar-Athletes in late April. Dordt (Iowa) led the way with 11 honorees.
The 2023 list featured 158 student-athletes that achieved at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) at their institution. In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, must appear on the eligibility certificate for the sport and have attended one full year at said institution.
The USCAA's National All-Academic Award is designed to recognize all student-athletes (sophomores, juniors, and seniors at four-year institutions and sophomores at two-year institutions) who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 (on a 4.00-point system) or greater. This season's award is for those student-athletes that participate at a member institution in a sport in which there is not currently a USCAA National Championship.
