PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University men's soccer fell, 1-0, to Hilbert (N.Y.) College to open Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action at Highmark Stadium Saturday morning.
It was Hilbert's first win of the season, and a free kick just outside 18 yards in the 14th minute was all the Hawks (1-5-1, 1-0 AMCC) needed to hang on for the win.
The Celtics (2-6, 0-1 AMCC) saw several nice opportunities to score in the second half.
Nico Bel (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Florida SouthWestern State College) narrowly missed two shots at 49' and 56' that went wide, and Marcus Wilson (Olean, N.Y./Portville Central School) struck a shot on goal in the 68th minute after a one-on-one chance.
The Celtics afforded the Hawks two penalty kicks in the second half, but Carlow came away unscathed after the first PK at 61' missed high.
Goalkeeper Zac Kolich (Enon Valley, Pa./Blackhawk HS/Pittsburgh Technical College) came up with a huge stop against the second penalty kick in the 81st minute to keep Carlow in the game. He made two saves in the second half.
Alex Remington (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park HS) suffered the loss after making four stops in net in the first half.
The Hawks outshot the Celtics, 15-9 (7-5 on goal), and held a 6-3 corner kick advantage.
The Celtics travel to Mount Aloysius College for a 5 p.m. game Oct. 1.
