PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University men's soccer defeated Penn State Mont Alto, 3-0, in its home opener at Highmark Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
Junior Eric Fowler (Torrington, Conn./Wamogo Regional HS/Roger Williams University) scored a brace to lead the Celtics' offensive, all of which came in the second half of play.
Carlow landed its first goal in the 50th minute when Hunter Brady (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York HS) found Fowler with a cross in front of the net. The Celtics scored their second goal minutes later off a Gavin Moore (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills HS) corner kick at 52'.
A header attempt off the corner by Konner Sayre (Meadville, Pa./Meadville Area Senior HS) flew toward Rudy Nickles (Pittsburgh, Pa./Moon Area HS/Duquesne University), who headed the ball into the net during the melee.
Fowler scored his second goal of the match in the 65th minute off a free kick from 20 yards out.
The Celtics outshot the Lions, 22-9 (10-5 on goal), while Mont Alto held a narrow 6-5 corner kick advantage.
Alex Remington (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park HS) and Zac Kolich (Enon Valley, Pa./Blackhawk HS/Pittsburgh Technical College) split time in net, recording the clean sheet with five saves between them.
The Celtics return to action with a 3 p.m. game at St. Vincent College Sept. 7.
