PITTSBURGH --- Graduate student Jake Stariha led the Carlow University men's golf team with several academic awards this season.
Stariha, a Master of Business Administration major from Leechburg, Pa., played his entire collegiate career with the Celtics.
This season, he placed fifth individually at the Grove City Invitational, earning River States Conference (RSC) Men's Golfer of the Week honors in September.
Thanks to his hard work on the green and in the classroom, Stariha earned several national academic awards. He was named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® at-large team; the Daktronics National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar-Athlete team; and the RSC Scholar-Athlete team.
The 2023 Academic All-District® Men's and Women's At-Large Teams, selected by CSC, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
The CSC Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed at the links above.
The NAIA CSC Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported through the NAIA national office.
The NAIA also released the 2023 Daktronics NAIA Men's Golf Scholar-Athletes in mid-May. Over 375 student-athletes were recognized from over 130 schools nationwide.
St. Ambrose (Iowa) was the clubhouse leader with nine recipients each. Dordt (Iowa) and Mount Mercy (Iowa) tied for second with eight honorees each, while Keiser (Fla.), Missouri Valley and OUAZ (Ariz.) are tied with seven each.
In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, must appear on the eligibility certificate for the sport and have attended one full year at said institution.
Finally, the RSC Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete Team was named with team members having a 3.25 and above GPA and attendance at their school for more than one semester. Midway took top honors with six named to the list, followed by IU East with five.
