Shaky start suppresses Men’s Basketball in loss to Hilbert

The Hawks (10-1, 3-0 AMCC) shot 50 percent (17 for 34) from the floor in the first half, while Carlow (1-11,1-3 AMCC) shot just 21.4 percent (6 for 28).
Tomasi Pavihi (Wellington, New Zealand/St. Mary's Ryken HS/College of Marin) led the Celtics with 17 points and nine rebounds. Jimmy Giannetta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Saint Joseph HS) added 12 points and eight rebounds in the effort.
Hilbert jumped out to a 13-7 lead and strung together a 12-2 run in a little over four minutes to take a 25-9 lead over the Celtics midway through the first half.
The Hawks held Carlow to just one point over the span of six minutes to take a commanding 45-19 lead into intermission.
The Celtics returned from halftime inspired, outscoring Hilbert 36-32, but Carlow could not recover from the first half margin.
Carlow shot 83.3 percent (15 for 18) from the foul line on the evening.
Hilbert outrebounded the Celtics, 44-38, and outscored Carlow, 26-13, off the bench.
Larry Morse led the Hawks with a game-high, double-double 23 points and 13 rebounds. Jaden Mitchell added 21 points, and Jayden Montgomery dished out 10 assists.
The Celtics host Waynesburg University for a 2 p.m. game at Donahue Pavilion Dec. 20.
