KANSAS CITY, Mo. --- The Carlow University Department of Athletics received one final award as it transitions from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
The Celtics earned the distinction as a 2022-23 NAIA Champions of Character® Five-Start Silver Institution, the association announced last week.
Institutions are measured on a demonstrated commitment to Champions of Character and earn points in character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Institutions earned points based on exceptional student-athlete grade point averages and by having minimal to no ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.
Carlow garnered 88 points on the Champions of Character scorecard, which included a clean slate with zero ejections for the year. As a department, the Celtics boasted a 3.34 overall GPA for the 2022-23 season.
Additionally, Carlow's former conference – the River States Conference – was named a Five-Star Conference. To earn the honor, the below criteria must be met:
- Established Champions of Character Conference Committee
- Conference has a conduct in competition oversight committee composed of a minimum of three members
- At least 50 percent of member institutions must receive the NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Institution Award
